Thick fog and low visibility disrupted air travel across the U.K., causing widespread delays and cancellations during one of the year’s busiest travel weekends.

Travelers flying to and from the U.K. faced widespread delays and cancellations on Saturday as dense fog and low visibility disrupted air traffic during one of the busiest weekends of the year. The adverse weather conditions created chaos for passengers returning home after Christmas or preparing for New Year celebrations, with the country’s airports struggling to maintain smooth operations.

Severe Delays at Gatwick and Other Airports
London’s Gatwick Airport, a key hub for European travel, experienced severe delays that continued throughout Saturday. Passengers were warned of potential disruptions and urged to check with their airlines. The airport had already reported delays of up to three hours late on Friday, with at least 40 flights delayed by Saturday morning. Most of these flights were short-haul routes to European destinations, causing frustration for thousands of passengers.

Heathrow and Other Major Airports Impacted
Heathrow Airport, one of the busiest in Europe, also saw significant disruptions. Travelers were advised to stay in close contact with their airlines to manage potential schedule changes. Similar reports of delays and cancellations surfaced at Stansted Airport in London and Manchester Airport, further highlighting the widespread impact of the weather.

Met Office Issues Severe Fog Warnings
The U.K.’s Met Office issued warnings of thick fog patches across the country, reducing visibility to as little as 100 meters (328 feet) in some areas. The organization advised travelers to allow extra time for their journeys and urged drivers to exercise extreme caution. The combination of reduced visibility and peak travel volumes led to mounting delays for both air and ground transportation.

Travel Plans in Disarray
For many travelers, the disruptions caused significant challenges. Kiera Quayle and her husband, returning to London after visiting family on the Isle of Man, found their flight delayed for hours before being canceled outright. Their experience mirrored the frustrations of countless others trying to navigate the travel chaos during the holiday period.

Ongoing Restrictions from Air Traffic Control
The U.K.’s main air traffic control organization confirmed that restrictions would remain in effect in areas with low visibility. These measures, designed to ensure safety, added to the delays as airports struggled to clear backlogs. With the Christmas holiday rush transitioning to New Year preparations, the timing of the disruptions couldn’t have been worse for travelers.

Airlines and Airports Urge Caution
Amid the travel chaos, airlines and airports urged passengers to stay updated on flight statuses and be prepared for potential changes. While safety remained the top priority, the ripple effects of the disruptions highlighted the challenges of maintaining operations during unpredictable weather conditions.

As the fog lingers, passengers are advised to exercise patience and plan for potential delays to avoid further complications during this peak travel period.
